An option is the right to buy or sell something under a certain set of conditions.

For example, if you're in the market to buy a house, you can obtain an option (sometimes called a binder) on that house for an amount of money to later be credited to the down payment. Generally, this option gives you the right to purchase the house at an agreed price if your application for a mortgage is approved.
